ChalkLens publishes sourced figures on homeschooling and alternative K-12 education. ChalkLens (chalklens.org) is an independent quantitative education research desk. Every report names its sources and separates reported counts from our estimates.

ChalkLens is published and operated by an independent research desk. We name the people who research and edit each report so readers can see who checked the numbers.
What we track
Our reports answer measurable questions about home education and other K-12 models:
- Enrollment and demographics: State counts, yearly changes, rural and urban patterns, and demographic shifts.
- Academic results: Standardized test percentiles and post-secondary completion rates, with notes about who took the tests.
- State rules: Attendance laws, notice requirements, Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), and microgrants.
- Curriculum and costs: Family spending, digital platforms, co-op fees, and public spending per pupil.
- Special education: Accommodations, flexible pacing, and parents’ reasons for choosing a different setting.
What we don’t cover
- Partisan advocacy: We don’t lobby or take a political position on school-choice laws.
- Paid curriculum rankings: Publishers can’t buy a ranking, preferred benchmark, or endorsement.
- Legal advice: Our reports are for research and general information. Check your state’s rules with the relevant education department or a lawyer.
